Twincraft Soap Commits to Sound Environmental Practices and Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions

WINOOSKI, VT – Twincraft Soap Company is driving efforts to limit their impact on the environment. With consultative assistance from Efficiency Vermont, Twincraft Soap has reduced their yearly energy consumption by 3.7%, a savings of 138,000 kilowatt hours per year and a net reduction of over 163,000 lbs of greenhouse gas emissions.

“That is the equivalent of removing 14 cars from the road or planting 16 acres of trees,” said Taurin Spalding, Project Manager, Efficiency Vermont. “Twincraft sees the value of taking the necessary steps now that will limit their future impact on our environment.”

Twincraft accomplished this savings by modifying existing production equipment with higher efficiency motors, installing a capacitor bank that reduces the use of power, installing new pump controls, implementing fans with programmable thermostats and installing occupancy sensor lights.

Twincraft has also set up a program with Intervale Compost Products. Up to 50% of soap not suitable for production is now sent to the Intervale’s composting site. Previously, the soap would have been sent to a landfill.

“Twincraft’s decision to compost their waste is very community-minded,” said Eric Van Vlandren, Sales Education Coordinator for Intervale Compost Products. “Soap is an organic matter that breaks down very quickly. As compost, it’s turned into a rich, non-toxic soil enhancer that benefits many local farmers, gardeners and landscapers.”“

We are pleased our scrap soap will serve a purpose. We are always looking for ways to cut waste and have minimum impact on the environment,” said Dan Roscioli, Twincraft’s Director of Technical Services. “We are now looking at composting up to 10 tons of scrap soap per month. Plus we are now actively engaged in a recycling program for our scrap metal. This past January we recycled nearly 4500 pounds of scrap metal alone.”

Twincraft also offers their customers environmentally friendly packaging alternatives. This includes sourcing a printer that offers 100% recyclable, biodegradable packaging that’s made up of 75% post consumer waste. This same company operates on 100% wind power.
